Repairing A Hole In Your Metal Roof
When a metal roof develops a hole, how that hole is repaired will affect how long the repair will hold. If your hole repair does not last and moisture leaks through the roof, this moisture can damage the interior of your home. As a result, it is essential to get your roof repaired right the first time.
Be Careful Climbing Onto the Roof
Before you climb onto your roof, you will need to make sure that it is safe to walk on your roof by determining if the roof is capable of bearing weight. When placing a latter against the roof, make sure that you place it against an easement rather than against a gutter, which is less able to support the weight of the ladder. Make sure there is someone at the bottom of the ladder who can hold it so it does not move. Since metal roofs can be dangerous to repair, consider hiring a roofing contractor.
Clean the Area Before Adding the Panel
Before you begin repairing the hole, you will need to clean the area where the hole is located. Whatever caused the hole in the first place has likely made the area dirty. You may also need to remove dirt and algae growth. Use any cleaner that is safe to use with metals.
Apply a Sealant
To make it easier to apply the sealant to the metal panels, you will need to scuff the area with a wire brush. Limit scuffing to the part of the roof upon which the new metal panel will be installed.
Cut Out a Metal Panel to Cover the Hole
Cut your sheet metal until you have a section that is two inches wider and longer than the size of the area that you need to patch. Then, cut the corners so the edges are rounded. This will cause the corners to not catch snow or ice.
Paint acrylic over the area. Then, place the metal sheet over the hole and smooth the metal sheet. Then, apply a second coat of acrylic. Then, allow the sealant to dry before applying a paint.
Find a Replacement Paint
Choose a paint that is compatible with the sealant that you used. If you would like your roof to look aesthetically pleasing, you will want to paint it to make sure that it has the same color as the rest of your roof. Lightly brush the roof with the desired paint.
