If you have ever seen pictures of, or been to the real Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo's work is incredible to behold. If you have cathedral ceilings in your home, and you are thinking about creating works of art on them, you are going to need a few supplies. Here are a few things that Michelangelo himself supposedly used while he painted the Sistine Chapel.
Interior Paint and Brushes
When you paint your cathedral ceilings, be sure to purchase several small cans of interior paint. This may be more expensive than buying gallon-size paints, but if you plan to paint lots of details into your ceiling art, buying twenty-plus gallons of paint in all the colors you will need is just not cost-effective for this project if you do not use every drop in the large cans. Additionally, be sure to purchase several bristle brushes (and not sponge brushes) with which to paint.
Maulstick (or Mahlstick)
This funny-looking device is a dowel with a rounded, padded end. It is used to support your working hand while you are painting. Michelangelo would have used it to steady and support his painting hand while he painted the ceiling, and you may need the same amount of support while you work. It also helps to take breaks when the hand holding the maulstick becomes as tired as the hand creating the painting, so be sure to use this item and take frequent breaks.
Painter's Tape for Gridwork
If you are not a free-hand kind of artist, it is a good idea to make a grid on your cathedral ceilings with painter's tape. This will help you set up the ceiling as a series of smaller paintings to focus on, and help you focus on one area at a time. While Michelangelo did not have painter's tape in his day, it is very probable that he did a pre-sketch and gridwork pattern on the ceiling prior to beginning his paintings.
To paint the extraordinarily high ceilings in the chapel, Michelangelo used scaffoldings. To paint your cathedral ceilings in your home, you will need the same. Because you cannot plant the legs of semi-permanent scaffolding in the floor of your house, you will need to rent scaffolding that has lockable wheels. Be sure to get enough vertical extensions and horizontal platforms so that you do not have to make several up and down trips for supplies. (Also, you may be lying on your back on the topmost platform of the scaffolding to paint, so if you are uncomfortable in this position or you cannot lay down on a hard surface, you might want to hire an artist for the job.)
